Xander falls asleep when he’s supposed to be watching Werewolf Oz, and
next morning a student, Jeff, is found mauled.
Buffy
is officially dating Scott Hope, and she starts seeing a school counsellor (a
condition for her return to school). When she patrols she stumbles across a
feral Angel, and takes him to the mansion (locking him up for safety), but
tells no-one about it. Two of Scott’s friends, Debbie and Pete, argue and Pete
becomes a Mr Hyde-like beast. It was Pete who killed Jeff, and now Mr Platt the
counsellor too. Buffy and Willow get the truth from a terrified Debbie. Pete
thinks Oz fancies Debbie, and they both fight in monster form. Faith
tranquillises Oz but Pete escapes. Buffy finds Debbie dead, then an escaped
Angel arrives and kills Pete.
Review:
One of the weakest episodes of the season, with the Jekyll/Hyde plot thread
handled with uncharacteristic clumsiness.
Best line:
“Buffy?” (Angel’s first post-hell word.)
Trivia:
Pete’s transformation mixes in odd elements of Jacob’s Ladder (head shaking
thing) and a smidgen of The Incredible Hulk ‘you wouldn’t like me when
I’m angry...’.
Pop culture reference: “Every guy from Manimal down to Mr ‘I love
The English Patient’ has beast in him.” (Faith.)
Pop Culture reference: “I can handle the Oz Full Monty” (Xander.)
Presumably Angel was in the same hell dimension Buffy visited in Anne - he’s
certainly been tortured for hundreds of years.
