Odd
one this. Basically the Slayerettes crash out after the exhausting events of
the previous episode ("Primeval") and dream strange, disturbing
dreams. Willow's explore her fear of regressing to her nerdy season one self as
well as her terror of being on stage. Xander's dream largely deals with sex,
soldiers, ice cream and sex. But then he's a bloke. All the eams have two
things in common - a shadowy threat that stays hidden but dangerous, and a man
with cheese. A Cheese Man, if you will. During Gile's dream, he gradually works
out that the threat comes in thr form of the first Slayer, irked at having her
power used by the Slayerettes in order to pump up Buffy and kill Adam. Buffy
dreams next - of many very odd things, unsurprisingly. Eventually she faces the
first Slayer, an aborigine looking woman with body paint - obviously an early
human. She defeats her basically by ignoring her, and everyone wake up and
shares their odd dreams.
Review:
Whedon said that he felt that same 'special' feeling maing this episode as when
they made the superlative "Hush", but to be fair this episode doesn't
quite reach those heights. It's a very brave experiment, and a unique
way to finish a season off. A fascinating look into the lives of the core
characters, and brilliantly clever at points, and so deserves the five star
mark, but as good as Hush? No. Not quite. Close, though.
Best line:
(Tara in Buffy's dream): "You think you know. What's to come. What you
are. You haven't even begun."
Cheese Man (wearing two slices of cheese on his head): "I wear the cheese,
it does not wear me."

Trivia:
Pop culture reference: just before they all drop off to sleep, there's a
discussion about what video they should watch, and Xander votes for Apocalypse
Now - it even invades his dreams somewhat in the form of Principal Snyder.
Some fans have been desperately trying to search for meaning in the whole
Cheese Man thing. But there's no point! It means nothing! Joss is toying with
you!
