Spike wakes up in a hi-tech white cell next to Tom (ex of Sunday's
gang), as Riley realises he likes Buffy, and asks Willow's advice on how to
talk to her.
While
Xander (trying hard to recapture his macho military image) and Giles patrol,
Willow and Riley are at a party, working together to prime him for conversation
with Buffy. He chokes. Xander finds Harmony burning some of Spike's gear, and
after a hilarious fight sequence learns Spike is back. He warns Buffy, and she
leaves the party, as does Riley, who - with friends Graham and Forrest - enters
the Initiative HQ, and see Prof Walsh for debriefing on an escaped Spike! Buffy
and Riley and his troops independently hunt for Spike, who visits Willow in her
room. He finds he can't attack her without great pain, and escapes in the
confusion when Buffy and Riley end up fighting each other outside.
Review:
Buffy in season four has no problem asserting herself, as she demonstrates in
this episode. Giles no longer has much authority over her, as her confidence in
her fighting abilities and judgement have reached an all-time high. Spike's
scene with Willow is terrific ("Is it me?" she asks, worried), a
clever play on his impotence.
Best line:
Willow advises Riley: "Talk. Keep eye contact. Funny is good but don't be
glib. And remember, if you hurt her I will beat you to death with a shovel."
Bloopers:
Spike says he's "only 126" which conflicts with Giles' previous
research in School Hard (season one).
Trivia:
James (Spike) Marsters has made it to the credit sequence! Hooray!
Seth Green has been taken out of the credit sequence. Boo. And this is the
first time we discover his real name is Daniel Osborne.
