Anya is (slowly) getting used to her new teen persona, and asks Xander
to the Prom. Joyce visits Angel and expresses concern about his and Buffy’s
relationship, while somewhere a caged demon is getting antsy in someone’s
basement.
Angel
essentially dumps Buffy, saying she deserves more. He’s leaving Sunnydale after
the ascension. The demon bursts out of the cage, and while Xander and Cordelia
are at the dress shop she works at, it attacks a guy in a tux. Reviewing the
videotape footage the Slayerettes conclude that it’s a Hellhound, and has been
trained to kill students in formal dress, for the Prom. Cordelia is working at
the shop because her Dad has lost all his money, and is trying to save up for a
dress. Buffy is determined that everyone enjoys Prom night, hunts down the
Hellhound and his master - student Tucker, and kills the other three hounds
before they can reach the Prom. She wins a special award, Angel appears, and
everyone has a really nice night. For a change.
Review:
Buffy and Angel’s relationship is handled with real sensitivity and care, as is
Cordelia and Xander’s. A real feel-good episode, to warm the cockles of even
the iciest hearts. It’s nice to see Anya back, too.
Best line:
Anya: “Look, I know you find me attractive; I've seen you looking at my
breasts.”
Xander: “Nothing personal, but when a guy does that, it just means his eyes are
open.”
Bloopers:
In the dream wedding between Buffy and Angel, she puts a ring on his left
little finger. Strange.
Trivia:
To condition the Hellhounds, Tucker plays them videos of Carrie, Pretty In
Pink, Pump Up The Volume, The Club, Prom Night and Prom Night IV.
