Xander is having a bad night.
The other Slayerettes worry about him getting hurt on patrol, Cordelia
is being especially bitchy, and the school psycho, Jack O’Toole, has targeted
him.
He
gets a car to show he can be useful, and is sent to get donuts. Buffy and the
others research the Sisterhood of Jhe, an Apocalypse cult. Xander accidentally
ends up psycho Jack and his friends around town - worse, the friends are all
zombies. They raid a hardware store, and want to ‘initiate’ (ie kill) Xander,
but he scarpers. Seeing Faith battle one of the Sisterhood, he rescues her.
Bursting with energy she decides to have her wicked way with him, then kicks
him out, saying “That was great. I gotta shower.” Xander realises the zombie
gang are planning to put a bomb in the school boiler room, and goes to stop
them. The others are all battling hideous demons from the Hellmouth, trying to
avert the end of the world, as Xander takes out the zombie gang one by one,
then faces Jack (also a zombie) in the boiler room. He dares Jack to let the
bomb go off - he crumbles and diffuses it. Xander leaves, and Jack plans
revenge, but is eaten by Wolf Oz. The next time Cordelia gives Xander a
tongue-lashing he just smiles...
Review:
A brilliant reversal of the usual A and B plots, with Xander in the limelight
again. Relentlessly entertaining, and one of the funniest episodes of the whole
show, full stop. The scene where Buffy and Angel are having a particularly
wrought, passionate argument and Xander interrupts them is classic - how many
shows parody themselves so mercilessly?
Best line:
Xanderism: “If anyone sees my spine lying about, just try not to step on it.”

Trivia:
Pop culture reference: “But gee, Mr White! If Clark and Lois get all the good
stories I’ll never be a good reporter!” (Xander.)
Pop culture reference: “Hello Nasty”, the Beastie Boys album.
Reminiscent of a supernatural After Hours (an underrated Scorsese film).
